When it comes to concrete flooring there are certain things you can easily avoid if you’re aware of them. The following are just five common concrete problems that you should avoid.
1 – Acid Staining Buffalo Epoxy Flooring can help you determine if acid staining is ideal for your particular concrete flooring; not all concrete floors should be stained. Worse yet, applying the wrong amount (too much or not enough) can leave you with undesirable, spotty results that can worsen when the floor is cleaned. When stain is applied the right way you can continue with regular maintenance to keep your flooring looking its best for years to come. 2 - Efflorescence Efflorescence is what happens when water is in the concrete and carries excess salt to the surface. This can happen when the pressure created by salt and moisture vapor prevents the dye from penetrating the concrete and can sometimes slowly force it from the concrete. You can clean this from the surface however, with the simple mixture of 5 parts water and 1 part distilled vinegar. The mixture can be enhanced to target difficult areas. 3 – Humidity Levels Our WNY flooring company always encourages individuals to have a professional help with concrete flooring because there are many factors to consider involving the location’s environment and this includes the humidity levels. Moisture will move in or out of the concrete if the concrete's humidity levels are different than that of the humidity in the air above the flooring. A vapor barrier can help prevent problems caused by humidity and our concrete flooring specialists will help you determine if a barrier is necessary for your particular installation. Without this barrier your concrete slab could have 100% humidity just below the surface. 4 – Emissions from Moisture Vapor In order to produce a concrete slab cement, sand and aggregate are mixed with water. Any moisture that is not a part of the concrete mix will escape the concrete and this is call moisture vapor emission. When this happens your flooring could endure blisters, delamination and even bubbles in the surface. 5 - Osmosis As flooring solution experts it’s our job to understand concrete and all the many characteristics of concrete. When your concrete’s moisture vapor emission attempts to equal the surface’s soluble ions it causes osmosis. This pressure can sometimes be too much for the coating’s adhesion strength which in turn causes damage.
