There are many advantages to having polished concrete floors in your facility but like every flooring option, there are also a few disadvantages. Buffalo Epoxy Flooring has been in the business long enough to know what works and what doesn’t in certain environments and areas.

Luckily, the advantages still outweigh the disadvantages but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the ideal flooring solution for your particular needs. We can help you better determine if that is the case.

Advantages of Polished Concrete Floors

  • Durable – If you want a floor that will last for many years and withstand the constant traffic from people and equipment then polished concrete floors are a great choice.

  • Low Maintenance – It takes a considerable amount of time to clean flooring if you must scrub to eliminate debris and substances that occur on a daily basis in your particular facility.  With polished concrete floors you can simply sweep or dust mop daily with less effort. Damp mopping is recommended on a weekly basis to eliminate water marks, smudges, scuffs and simply restore the glossy surface to it’s attractive state.

  • Economical – Polished concrete is not as expensive as you might think but the simple fact of how long it will last drastically make up for the cost and then some. It really depends on your specific needs but polished concrete floors could range anywhere from $3 a square foot or up to $15 a square foot.

Therefore you shouldn’t rule this flooring out without first investigating the details and a receiving proper quote. You won’t have extra expenses due to rewaxing or buffing and should you decide to replace it at any time it will likely be because you want something different to look at; we can help at that time too!

  • Plethora of Modern Design Choices – We offer polished concrete flooring solutions that can be stained, providing you more control over the final color. We can also stencil in graphics or add engraving for unique designs or decoration into the surface at your request.

  • Superior Life-Span – When your polished concrete floors are installed correctly they will last for a very long time regardless of the harsh commercial environment your facility may endure.

Many other flooring alternatives cannot say the same; vinyl tile, laminated wood and carpet, for example. There is less upkeep for a concrete floor versus alternatives. All they need is a good cleaning/mopping on regular occasions.

  • Slip & Chemical Resistant – This feature is typically sought after in many different commercial properties to provide a safer environment for staff and visitors. We can also add a chemical-resistant epoxy sealer if your facility needs more protection against harmful chemicals.

  • Light Reflectivity – If you have a rather large facility or property that needs to be brightened and present a very clean, professional atmosphere polished concrete floors are ideal. They have high light reflectivity which can actually help enhance a room with natural light and reduce your energy costs.

  • No Harmful Volatile Organic Compounds – Also known as VOC, certain flooring installations emit harsh VOC which can be undesirable in certain facilities. Polished concrete floors do not have any VOC so your environment will remain safe while your new, attractive flooring is installed.

Disadvantages of Polished Concrete Floors

  • Hard Surface – People that work on their feet a lot understand the important of wearing the proper shoes based on the flooring material of their daily environment. Concrete is indeed sturdy but it also has a rather hard surface. You can easily tackle this drawback by placing proper floor mats in areas where employees stand the most at one given time.

  • Noisy – Many people are familiar with the noise that concrete floors can make and sound similar to flooring made of ceramic tile or natural stone. Even some hardwood flooring can be rather loud when walking across it. Noise-reduction techniques can be done in terms of adding elements designed to absorb sound; heavy curtains, rugs, acoustic panels on the wall, etc.

  • Very Cold – Polished concrete floors aren’t well-known for retaining heat which makes this particular flooring rather cold. However, it’s no worse than natural stone or ceramic tile.

There are ways around this and while many instantly think of rugs, you can also have radiant heating cables embedded into your floors which help harbor and maintain the heat, helping the floors to stay warmer. This method requires less energy than a forced air system but offers the same warmth and could reduce your utility expenses.
